Lettering Gallery Launch

A brand new gallery for a brand new hobby, brush pen lettering! I just started learning this gorgeous new art form earlier this year. After years of ‘gunna do’ I signed up for a short course with the beautiful Jess Matthews over at BRICK+MORTAR in Norwood. I’ve always loved the beautiful, easy flow script artists work with, whether the fun and free styles of brush pens or the utterly gorgeous calligraphy, there’s just something about hand-written script that even the most beautifully constructed fonts can’t recreate.

A nice touch added to a Melbourne Cup sweep we did at work for some of our customers. I just love the contrast of thick and thin, and getting out the old pen tool and turning the lines into vectors is somehow very soothing. I’ve always loved big sweeping curves; this art form is made for me!

From some of my earliest attempts in [2] and [3] through playing with my new toys (Micador calls them ‘early start’ chunky markers. I say they’re clearly for graphic designers!) and decorating a best friend’s birthday present. Aren’t they gorgeous? [2] is an abridged version of my favourite quote, which I’ve revisited more recently in the gallery: ‘True strength is breaking of just one square from a block of chocolate, and only eating the one square.’

I’m so glad I’ve finally gotten myself into the beautiful art of brush pen lettering. I love the rough edges and patches where the paper grain shows through, all those beautiful and real imperfections that say this was made by hand, especially for you. This isn’t a font or stock. This is real, and I’m all about the real. How about a touch of something real in your next design?
