Photography Gallery Launch
Time to announce the first of my galleries, the photography gallery! Which also includes illustration, but we’ll look at the photos today. The gallery itself I’ve made using a heavily modified version of the touchTouch script, because it’s so super customisable to my own needs, right down to the snazzy little preloader gif! It even allows mobile devices to swipe through the photos, a much more natural reaction than tapping a ‘next’ button.
Even without spending thousands on equipment and exotic destinations, there’s so much that can be done with photography these days. I did my research on ‘travel zoom’ cameras a few years back and landed myself a Sony HX9V, a lovely little pocket-sized camera with plenty of manual features, like exposure and focal length, and impressive zoom. I keep it in my bag wherever I go; it’s so easy to just pull it out and take a photo! I’ve always loved those opportunistic photos, shots of interesting cloud formations or cracked plaster walls with an artfully placed succulent, classic old doorways or classy café food presentations. I love the spontaneity that modern photography thrives in.
I like pairing different photos together, either to emphasise the common features of both or to begin a conversation between them. These two came from my first outing with my then-shiny new camera, just seeing what I could do with its zoom and focus. I just love the abstract nature of the two, the natural but somehow geometric lines. There’s a bunch of these sorts of pairings and collages in the main gallery.
And speaking of classic doors! Here’s a collection from my Instagram. There’s just something so pleasing about an old door, whether its paint is cracking and revealing half a dozen coats underneath or painted shiny and new.
Instagram is such a beautiful and clever way for businesses to promote their own branding. From clothing stores to cafés, the way individual photos are set up, framed and filtered or edited can really create a cohesive Insta. Easily my favourite social medium.
