the women of souli

Winner CJ Dennis Commendation Award for Literature 2005

the stones hold hands now
watching the sea
without dance, without song
they stand where you stood

the stones hold hands now
waiting for dawn
until the grecian sun rises
bringing warmth to your blood

the stones hold hands now
yearning to hear

“As indicated by the repeated line ‘the stones hold hands now’ this is a deliberately ambiguous poem. The repeated line is arresting, even startling. Even so, while the women of Souli are waiting in undefined hope, they also seem to be waiting in undefined fear and possible lamentation.”

kori mou

Winner South Australian Poetry Unhinged Festival 2005

i’m amazed when i’m asked if that’s me on the wall
when irish blood has watered down the greek
freckles splatter olive skin
green eyes reflect dark chocolate pools

your blood runs through the places that count
my heartbeat accompanies the bouzouki
my taste buds savour the retsina
my fingertips trace the waves

on the island you call me kori mou
my spirit lightens and my skin darkens
as hand in hand we dance together
new beginnings in a vibrant circle of life

long after the summer is over
and our suitcases are empty and stored
close your eyes and reach for my hand
mother and daughter, we will dance

“This piece stood out with its immediacy and intimacy. The writing is clear and clean free verse, yet in the four four-line stanzas much territory is traversed with much movement. Congratulations.”
