In a nutshell
Mehni: I'm Mehni, owner of the Easterner, strangely enough in the north-east of Ni-Yana. It was the most eastern pub in the city when it was established, but the city's grown a lot since then. Not particularly high-end, but it's got a good atmosphere and good brews.
Riona: My name's Riona, and I work at the palace laundry in Ni-Yana. I grew up in the desert and moved into the city when I was twenty-two, where I met Mehni. We have two beautiful twin daughters, Yamin and Nimay.

On the future
Riona: I think Yamin may well end up as a healer somewhere.
Mehni: She loves helping you with the cooking. She could be a cook, or a chef, even. Nimay'll be a swordswoman, unquestionably.
Riona: Unquestionably? Really?
Mehni: You don't think she will?
Riona: Not if I have anything to do with it.
Mehni: But she loves swords! She drags me to watch the Own leave and come back every mission!
Riona: Would you really feel comfortable if she was in the army, though?
Mehni: I can't see Raykin going to war anytime soon. Nothing's happened in the past, what, sixty or seventy years?
Riona: That doesn't mean it won't. What if we get attacked? She'd have no choice, then.
Mehni: Well, if King Mithé keeps doing his job, there'll be nothing to worry about.
Riona: Maybe...

On the twins' inability to talk
Riona: Do you think they'll ever talk?
Mehni: I don't know. It's looking unlikely, though, isn't it? Maybe when they're out in the real world, without us to talk for them, they'll start talking then.
Riona: I get the feeling they'll need more than that. Still, they seem to manage well enough without speech.
Mehni: I almost forget they don't talk, sometimes. Or rather, I forget it's an unusal thing.
Riona: Mmm, me too. Hopefully they'll be able to get that way with other people.
Mehni: I'm sure they will.

On desert magic
Mehni: I'll be brutally honest and admit that until the girls came along, I didn't really believe in desert magic.
Riona: River rat.
Mehni: Desert palm. It's not an easy concept to come to grips with. You know the river's there because you 'just do'. You know what other people with desert magic are thinking because you 'just do'. I still don't understand it, but seeing you with the girls, I'm obviously missing something.
Riona: Well, you're too old to learn it properly now, but maybe we can teach you enough to at least be able to tell them apart.
Mehni: I can tell them apart! I just mix the names up sometimes.
Riona: Mhmm, I'm sure that's it.

Anything else?
Mehni: I used to be a merchant before I moved up in the world.
Riona: To pub ownership?
Mehni: Exactly, and I haven't looked back since.
Riona: I met the king once.
Mehni: That wasn't a meeting. You just said 'hello' to him.
Riona: He said 'good morning' back, that makes it a meeting! How many times has the king said 'good morning' to you?
Mehni: Okay, okay. Hmm... I always wanted a son. Now we've got the girls, though, I wouldn't dream of it.
Riona: I never wanted boys. I had a younger brother.
Mehni: Do you ever wonder about them? Your desert group?
Riona: Occasionally. A lot less now, though. I've got my family here, now.
Mehni: Aww.
